Population Estimation and Projection Studies |
| |
Project staff prepares specialized demographic databases and reports for Los Angeles County departments. Information requests have included city by census tract-level estimates and projections of the County’s population by age, race/ethnicity, sex, poverty status and medical insurance status. WRMA staff served as consultants to the County’s 2001 Redistricting Workgroup, providing analysis of demographic trends between 1990 and 2000 and discussion of the new race/ethnicity categories in the 2000 Census. Currently they are assisting the Registrar Recorder/County Clerk’s Office to determine how to best locate minority language voters who require special electoral services.
The products of this project are used by the Health Department as denominators in its calculation of health statistics, such as age adjusted mortality, which are published in its annual reports. The information has been used by the County in developing funding formulas for some programs, and it has been utilized by departments for program planning and outcome evaluation. Other researchers, primarily from Los Angeles County academic institutions and community based organizations, also use the data. The information is made available through the Los Angeles Children Planning Council’s website and through special requests to the County’s Urban Research Section.
In performing this work, WRMA obtains and validates tract-level files on vital records, licensed drivers, registered voters, and housing units. Other data inputs at higher levels of geography include school enrollments and surveys. These data are used in a model that updates data from the most recent census to make estimates for the current year and projections in 5–year intervals. The population estimates and projections are compared to county– and city–level estimates and projections from the Bureau of the Census and California's Demographic Research Unit. For the base 2002 round of estimates and projections, the administrative records data and survey data have been acquired and prepared. The 2000 Census data have also been analyzed. Geographic correspondence bridges have been made between the 1990 census tract geography and the 2000 census tract geography. |
